Is Trying to Be the Holiday Superwoman Burning You Out?

The holidays are here, and you’re juggling gift shopping, hosting, decorating, and baking… so where does that leave you to enjoy this season?

The pressure to do it all and to do it perfectly can leave you overwhelmed, grumpy and resentful of this whole month!

But there is a way to navigate the holidays without burning yourself out and actually enjoying the whole thing!

The Holiday Superwoman Trap

While social media can be great for inspiration, it can also highlight all the ways it feels like we are doing everything wrong and not good enough.

Then add in pressure from Great-Aunt Alice who says the turkey doesn’t look like it is supposed to, why do these cookies not taste homemade, or in my day…

The pressure to be perfect is never-ending, leads to burn-out, exhaustion and overwhelming stress and anxiety.

Take back your holiday season! These are my favorite tips to flip the script on holiday stress and pressure and create a holiday that’s not only memorable but also JOYFUL!

Actual Tips to Manage Holiday Stress

Tip 1: Embrace the Power of Delegation

  • Assign tasks like decorating or gift wrapping to family members. Chances are, they’re more than happy to help and it’ll take some weight off your shoulders.
  • Teamwork makes the dreamwork and all that. Embrace done is better than not and let yourself enjoy the time with friends and family.

Tip 2: Set Boundaries and Learn to Say No

  • When you feel the need to go to every party, every program, do all the things, you don’t actually end up enjoying anything. Say YES to only the things that spark joy for you.
  • So how do you go about gracefully declining obligations? Here are a few of my favorites:
  • “Thank you for thinking of me/us, but our plate is as full as we like this week/month/day.”
  • “No, but thank you for the invitation.”
  • “I am unable to do this, but I have some great stores/options that you might use.”

Tip 3: Prioritize Self-Care

  • Cold cocoa is gross. Neglecting your self-care is like letting your hot coca go cold. Take 5-10 minutes each day that are just for you.
  • Check out my YouTube channel for meditations, quick yoga classes or journal prompts to keep you well taken care of this holiday season.

Tip 4: Create a Realistic Plan

  • Break the big tasks down into their individual steps. It’ll be easier to manage and imagine all the things you will be able to cross off of your to-do list! This is also helpful for delegating individual steps/tasks to others.

Shift Your Mindset

The focus of any holiday celebration should be JOY not perfection.

Which I get is easier said than done. But why spend another holiday too focused on perfection that you miss the laughter, the fun or the chance to recharge.

The stories we tell about holidays past are never about how perfect it all was, it’s about the time the dog stole the turkey, when uncle Fred knocked over the Christmas tree or when everyone was snuggled up watching movies and eating all the leftovers.

Don’t lose your chance to embrace and enjoy the imperfection and beauty of the holidays
