Ah, the holidays! They’re full of lights, yummy treats, and so much family time. There is much to love about this season, but let’s be real: the holidays can also make us feel like we’re juggling flaming marshmallows while riding a unicycle. Between the parties, the shopping, the baking, the commitments, well it can feel like everyone wants a piece of you and that there isn’t enough of you to go around.
But don’t worry! I’ve got five super-easy ways to help you keep your cool this season. Let’s make this holiday season, sanity-saving and managable!
1. Get Outside (Even If It’s Cold!)
Why fresh air works wonders
Do you know what’s magic for your brain? Fresh air! It’s like giving your thoughts a big hug. Being outside clears your mind and helps you feel happy—even if it’s just a quick walk around the block. Also don’t forget that Vitamin D from a bit of sunshine too.
Stuck for ideas on how to enjoy the outdoors?
- Take a mini hike (pretend you’re exploring Narnia!).
- Build a snowman or jump in a pile of leaves. 🍂⛄
- Go for a “holiday lights walk” to check out decorations in your neighborhood.
Even 10 minutes outside can make you feel like a new person. It may be just the break you need to make all that family time bearable.
2. Journal It Out (Because Your Brain Deserves a Break!)
What is journaling, and why is it magical?
Journaling is like talking to your best friend… but on paper. You write down your thoughts, and suddenly, the world feels a little less chaotic. It’s like emptying a super-full backpack. Taking a moment to get your thoughts down on paper will also get the swirl of thoughts out of your head. This in turn lets your brain focus on other things. It’s a great way to get perspective on what been troubling you, stressing you out, or just getting you excited.
Some of my favorite prompts.
- What’s one thing that made you smile today? 😊
- If you could have a holiday superpower, what would it be?
- Write a list of things you’re grateful for—peppermint hot chocolate counts!
Grab a pen and see where your thoughts take you. It’s fun, I promise!
3. Take a Moment to Breathe (It’s Free and Awesome!)
How to breathe like a pro
Breathing sounds simple, right? But when was the last time you really paid attention to your breath? Taking slow, deep breaths can help you go from “AHHH!” to “Ahhh…” in no time. Taking to notice all your senses as you breathe can help manage anxiety and bring you back to the present moment. If you need to find some equilibrium then breathing is where it’s at.
Mini breathing exercises you’ll love
- Try the Equal Ratio Breathing Method: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4. Take a minute and you’ll notice a dramatic difference.
- Imagine you’re blowing up a balloon with each breath. 🎈
- Pair your breathing with some gentle stretches. Just being mindful with your breath and body can bring you back to a better resting space.
Just a few deep breaths can calm your holiday jitters and get you ready to face anything.
4. Take a Nap (Yes, Seriously!)
Why rest is the secret sauce of sanity
You know that cranky feeling when you’re too tired? Yeah, me too. Naps are like a reset button for your brain. Even 20 minutes can turn your day around. It’s not always about the sleep, sometimes it just about giving your brain and your body a chance to stop and recharge. So much about your schedule is probably wonky so find space to rest.
Tips for sneaking in power naps
- Set a timer for 15–20 minutes (no longer, or you’ll feel groggy).
- Cozy up with a blanket and pillow.
- If naps aren’t your thing, try closing your eyes and relaxing for a bit. Put on a guided meditation and let your brain and body find some peace.
5. Drink Some Water (Holidays = Hydration!)
Make water your holiday BFF
With all the cookies and festive drinks, it’s easy to forget good ol’ H2O. But staying hydrated keeps your energy up and your mood happy. Plus it helps keep you regular and well that may be TMI but it’s important too!
Fun ways to stay hydrated
- Add a splash of cranberry juice or orange slices for a holiday twist.
- Use a cute water bottle (bonus points if it has glitter ✨).
- Set reminders on your phone to drink up!
Your body will thank you for the extra love.
